Visiting the West Coast from Victoria: Hiking, Beaches & Epic Views

A day trip to the west coast of Vancouver Island from Victoria is an unforgettable adventure. Towering old-growth forests, wild beaches, and rugged coastal trails make this stretch between Sooke and Port Renfrew a paradise for outdoor lovers.

But is it possible to experience it all in just one day?

Absolutely—if you know where to go. Here’s how to pack breathtaking scenery, epic hikes, and the best hidden spots into a single, action-packed trip.

A couple walks along the beachat Sooke, on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Why Take a Day Trip to the West Coast of Vancouver Island?

The southwest coast of Vancouver Island is raw, untamed, and incredibly beautiful. It’s where dense rainforests meet the Pacific, offering some of the best outdoor experiences in British Columbia.

For this article, I’ll discuss the area along Highway 14 between Sooke and Port Renfrew. While still quiet and peaceful, this area is within striking distance of Victoria for a quick getaway. If you’re looking to go further afield, I’d recommend a weekend getaway to Tofino.

The southwest coast of Vancouver Island features:

  • Unbelievable hiking – Legendary trails like the Juan de Fuca Trail and Botanical Beach offer unreal scenery.
  • Secluded beaches – Mystic Beach, Sombrio Beach, and Sandcut Beach feel like hidden worlds.
  • Massive old-growth forests – Explore towering Douglas firs and giant cedars in Avatar Grove.
  • World-class wildlife – Keep an eye out for eagles, whales, and black bears.

Perfect for hikers, photographers, and anyone craving nature, this area is only 1.5-2.5 hours from Victoria, making it a wild yet accessible escape. For this reason, it’s near the top of my list of the top day trips from Victoria.

Why You Shouldn’t Take a Day Trip to the West Coast

  • It’s a lot of driving for one day – If you want to truly enjoy the nature, it can feel rushed.

This isn’t a deal breaker, but an overnight stay in Port Renfrew makes for a more relaxed experience. Want to sleep under the stars? The west coast is home to some of the most beautiful camping near Victoria.

Where Is the West Coast of Vancouver Island Relative to Victoria?

The southwest coast stretches from Sooke to Port Renfrew, about 40 to 110 km west of Victoria. The map above illustrates the route to my favourite spot, French Creek Provincial Park, around the halfway point.

It’s a remote yet accessible region packed with some of the most incredible landscapes on Earth.

Ease of reachability: 7/10 (Well-paved roads, but winding and slow in some areas.)

How to Get to the West Coast from Victoria

  • By Car: 45 minutes to Sooke, an hour to French Beach, 1.5 hours to Sombrio Beach, 2.5 hours to Port Renfrew. Estimated cost: $20-40 in fuel.
  • By Bus: Limited BC Transit service to Sooke. No direct public transit beyond Sooke.
  • By Bike: Possible, but challenging due to steep climbs and long distances. The Galloping Goose Trail will take you to Sooke in 2-3 hours.

The Easiest Way to Do a Day Trip

Driving is the only real option. It gives you the freedom to explore multiple spots and adjust your itinerary based on the weather and tides. If you don’t have a car, consider renting one or carpooling with fellow adventurers.

I’ve never done the trip, but those who’ve biked have raved about it. This would be best for advanced bikers who are more about the journey than the destination.

What to See While You’re on the West Coast

  • Mystic Beach – A dramatic beach with a waterfall spilling straight onto the sand.
  • Sombrio Beach – Surfers love it, but the real gem is the hidden waterfall inside a mossy canyon.
  • Sandcut Beach – A short hike leads to waterfalls tumbling over sandstone cliffs.
  • Botanical Beach – Tidal pools filled with colorful marine life, best explored at low tide.
  • Avatar Grove – A stunning forest of massive old-growth trees, including the famous “Canada’s Gnarliest Tree.”
  • Juan de Fuca Trail – A stunning 25-km trail along the west coast. Even a short section offers jaw-dropping coastal views.

Best Thing to Do on a Day Trip to the West Coast

If you only have time for one thing, hike a section of the Juan de Fuca Trail. The 25 km trail winds through lush rainforest before revealing wild, windswept beaches with waterfalls cascading from the cliffs above.

The section closer to Sooke between China Beach and Bear Beach is more accessible and better for beginner and intermediate hikers, like me! So that’s where I head when I’m in the area.

The stretch between Magdelena and Sombrio Points is stunning if you’re more advanced.

For food, pack a picnic or stop in Shirley at Stoked Wood Fired Pizzeria for incredible pizza and ocean views. Need coffee? Cold Shoulder Café in Jordan River is a must-stop.

Is a Day Trip to the West Coast Worth It? My Experience

Without a doubt! The first time I went, I underestimated just how incredible the landscapes would be. Every stop felt like it belonged on a postcard.

One of my biggest surprises was the hidden waterfall at Sombrio Beach. You’d never know it was there unless someone told you. I followed a narrow canyon into the forest, and suddenly, there it was—water pouring down moss-covered walls in a magical little cave.

One tip? Bring waterproof shoes. Many trails can be muddy, especially in the fall and winter. There are also some narrow spots along the beach when the tide comes in.

One thing I’d avoid? Trying to see everything in one go. Pick 3-4 stops and really enjoy them instead of rushing through.
