The valley is home to Canada’s only Mediterranean climate zone. Toss in the area’s rich soil and you have the perfect conditions for producing outstanding Pinot Noir, Ortega, and sparkling wines.

If there’s one small downside, some of the smaller wineries require reservations, but planning ahead ensures a fantastic visit.
The Top Cowichan Valley Wineries
As of 2025, I’ve made 3 Cowichan wine tasting trips with some of my besties. It has become something of an annual summer tradition. Here are a few of my favourite stops so far:
- Blue Grouse Estate Winery: A stunning family-run winery with award-winning Ortega and Pinot Gris.
- Averill Creek Vineyard: Known for its outstanding Pinot Noir and breathtaking hillside views.
- Unsworth Vineyards: A top pick for wine and food pairings, with a cozy on-site restaurant.
- Enrico Winery: A fun stop with a relaxed vibe, live music, and approachable wines.
- Merridale Cidery: Looking for something different? The area is also home to one of BC’s premier cideries.

The Best Place to Taste in the Cowichan Valley
If you only have time for one stop, make it Blue Grouse Estate Winery. The peaceful setting, friendly staff, and standout wines make this a top choice. The terrace overlooking the vineyards is a great place to sip and relax.
My favourite was the Estate Pinot Gris. It is everything you’d look for in a summer patio wine and more: cool, crisp, and clean.
Other great things to do in the area include a long lunch at Unsworth Vineyards or sampling Pinot Noir at Averill Creek.

Where are the Cowichan Valley Wineries?
Cowichan Valley wineries are spread throughout the valley, roughly an hour’s drive north of Victoria. They’re easy to reach by car, and many are located within a short distance of each other.
Transit does reach the valley from Victoria. But the nature of wine tasting means you’ll be far from towns like Duncan or Cowichan Bay. So, I’d recommend driving or booking a private tour.
Some wineries welcome walk-ins, but others require reservations, especially on weekends. If you’re visiting multiple spots, booking tastings in advance can help you make the most of your day.

What is Cowichan Valley Wine Tasting Like? My Experience
The first time I visited Cowichan Valley wineries, I expected good wine. What I didn’t expect was how personal and welcoming the experience would be.
At Blue Grouse, the winemaker poured our tastings and shared stories about the vineyard. At Unsworth, we had a long, lazy lunch on the patio, paired with their famous sparkling wine. At Averill Creek, the view stretched for miles, and their Pinot Noir was some of the best I’ve had.
One thing to keep in mind? Some wineries are off the beaten path, so a GPS or map helps. Also, expect a slower pace—this is a place to sip and enjoy, not rush.
